Ostensibly a comedy, the film is mercilessly unfunny. Comparisons to Glee are inevitable, but the truth is, PP is so utterly dull and witless, so aggressively devoid of joy or humor or anything akin to real human feelings, it makes the worst episode of Glee look like Singin' In The Rain by comparison. There is not a single unique idea to be found within a light year of its sorry script. Actually, if you've ever seen any film starring characters under 25, you know the whole movie. If you read the IMDb synopsis, you know the whole movie.
I'm given to assume it got its high rating only because the studio wouldn't allow any critics to screen it without first producing proof that they possessed an IQ of 70 or under. An 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes got me to sit through the whole thing (albeit with a fair amount of time spent pressing fast-forward), just to see if there was something - ANYTHING - that could justify such an absurdly high score. Some positive word-of-mouth made me curious enough to DVR it.

The single best thing I came away with after watching this movie was the wild relief I felt knowing that at least I didn't pay to subject myself to it. But after she meets Jesse, from the rival all-male a cappella group, Beca has a new outlook and takes it upon herself to help the Bellas find their new look and sound and get back into the competition. Among the new recruits is freshman Beca, an independent, aspiring DJ with no interest in the college life. After a disastrous failing at last year's finals, they are forced to regroup. But once one character falls into a lake of it and commences making the equivalent of snow angels, you fear that the movies have learned the wrong lesson from “Bridesmaids.The Barden Bellas are a collegiate, all-girls a cappella singing group thriving on female pop songs and their perfect looks. I don’t object to the two scenes of projectile vomit here. Her broadness and the way it’s used points to where all comedies starring women seem forced to go: the bathroom. Mostly, “Pitch Perfect’’ leans hard on the lawlessness of the stout Australian Rebel Wilson, who plays a character called Fat Amy and has yet to find a movie that requires her to pick a character and stay in it.
The throwaway lines in Kay Cannon’s script are so many and so expertly deployed that you basically spend the whole movie digging through the trash.
The rest of the cast includes Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Adam DeVine, Ester Dean, and the disarmingly adorable Skylar Astin, the boy in the rival group who gets close to Becca by showing her “The Breakfast Club.’’ For its comedy, “Pitch Perfect’’ rubs its showy personalities together. The movie is based on Mickey Rapkin’s book about the a cappella universe, and it nails the music-nerd obsessiveness, the gravitational pull of some singers’ obnoxious talent, and the fact that the most beautiful a cappella comes not from the solo singer but from the harmonies’ wall of sound. The producer in Becca knows the only way to win nationals is to throw the audience, judges, and dourly catty color commentators - Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins - a curveball. They perform in flight-attendant getups and chirp their way through pre-millennial hits such as Ace of Base’s “The Sign.’’ In this world, they’re traditionalists. (At the moment her thing, musically, is the layered mash-up.) Becca does grunt work at the college radio station and reluctantly auditions for a prim, vaguely sexed-up a cappella outfit. She plays Becca, a reasonably cool freshman who aspires to be a record producer. The college singing-group comedy “Pitch Perfect’’ isn’t dumb, but Kendrick’s participation implies that it might also be smart.
Smart people in dumb entertainment situations relate to them. Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver do that. People who don’t want to be at a “Twilight’’ movie, for instance, but find themselves at one anyway? Kendrick’s for them. You see Kendrick in something you don’t think you should be watching, and it’s OK. Casting her to do anything in your movie makes you seem smart. You understand why Hollywood wants to hire Anna Kendrick.
